Colour Has Taken Hold of Me
size - 67 x 49cm - Sold

The title of this - intensely colourful - piece is taken from a statement made by Paul Klee, inspired by the light and colours of Sidi Bou Said, the Tunisian hillside village which has enthralled European painters, musicians and writers since the 1820s. Klee went here on his breakthrough 1914 trip through Tunisia. He was 35 but, before seeing Tunisia, he hadn't actually considered himself an artist:

"Colour has taken hold of me; no longer do I have to chase after it. I know it has hold of me for ever ... Colour and I are one. I am a painter."

I had started out with no particular theme for this piece which, therefore, makes it a good example of one of my creative/working techniques - to 'play' with the fibres and see where they take me ...
